In God’s Word there are several recordings of someone committing suicide.  Some are: 1) Samson - Judges 16:30   2) Saul - I Sam. 31:4   3) Saul’s Armor Bearer - I Sam. 31:5    4) Ahithopel  - II Sam. 17:23   5) Zimri - I Kings 16:18   6) Judas Iscariot - Matt. 27:5.

            Often a person will ask the question, “Can a Christian commit suicide?” or “Is suicide the unforgivable sin?”.  As a Gospel preacher I wish that I had “Pat Answers” for every question that comes to me, but as much as I  would like to be “Mr. Know It All”, there are times when I must say, “I will tell what the Bible says, but the final judging is up to God”.

Some reasons which I contend that one should avoid suicide are:

 1) It destroys the body and this is sin (I Cor. 6:19).  All of medical science

     can not restore life, once suicide is completed.

 2) It violates the 6th Commandment (Exodus 20:13; Matt. 19:18).  Murder is

     a terrible sin committed on another and worse on oneself.

 3) It breaks the 2nd Commandment (Matt. 22:39).  Love for one’s self is

     God-given and suicide would state that God is wrong.

 4) It rejects God’s promise to help one (Ps. 50:15; I Cor.10:13).  No matter

     how “bad” things get, God is just a prayer away and ready to rescue.

 5) It displays selfishness (James 2:21).  One says, “I don’t care about those I 

     am leaving behind to grieve for me”.

 6) It nullifies one’s Christian witness (Matt. 5:14-16).  One’s light is pretty

     dim when suicide is the direction one takes.

 7) It cancels out the hope of heaven (Gal. 5:21; Rev.21:8).  Heaven is for the

     “faithful until death”, but not self induced death.

            Once again, let me emphasize that the final judgment on man must be in God’s hands, and not ours.  Some times when a person commits suicide they are on medication which can produce “this route” or other circumstances.  God knows the heart and reason for all actions.  Thus,  may we leave it up to Him to do the judging, as He is filled with GRACE.
