SERMON LENGTH

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

Often - discussions in church lead to the preacher's sermon. Some say that they are too short, too soft, too harsh, and many times one is heard to say that the sermon is too long and if a preacher can not say all that needs to be said in twenty minutes - he is not much of a preacher.

Using this comment let us elaborate on this type of thinking.

1) If God had to use sixty-six books to write the Bible instead of ten, it is trash.

2) Ezra read Scripture to the congregation from dawn till noon instead of today's normal sixty seconds, therefore that is preposterous. (Neh.8:1-18).

3) Paul preached all night (Acts 20:7-12), surely he was demented.

4) If a sports event can not be played in twenty minutes, then they are of no-account.

5) If a TV program can not be viewed in twenty minutes, forget it.

6) If one can not attend and complete a Dinner Theater in twenty minutes, one should not attend one.

7) If one cannot close on a real estate deal in twenty minutes, the property is not worth buying.

8) If one cannot get to a vacation spot in twenty minutes, then how relaxing can it be?

9) If one cannot undergo a life-saving surgery in twenty minutes, the surgeon needs replaced.

10) If one cannot complete a term paper in twenty minutes, colleges should be changed.

In nations where Satan has not filled the lives of people with the unimportant people will walk for miles and stand for hours to hear the gospel in order to learn the way of salvation.

Plainly, don't get short changed. Be ready to meet our Maker. The Bible teaches that to avoid hell and gain heaven - one must:

1) Believe In Jesus As Savior (Acts 16:31) 2) Repent Of Sins (Acts 17:30)
3) Confess Christ Audibly (Acts 8:37) 4) Be Baptized In Water (Acts 2:38)
5) Live A Christian Life (Acts 14:22) 6) Be Active in the Church (Acts 2:47)
