“WHY YOUNG PEOPLE LEAVE CHURCH”
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
Some have noticed that in many churches of all faiths that from the ages of 18-45 there appear to be gaping holes in the membership. What are some possible reasons for young people leaving the church? The following may be some reason or excuses:
1) No other young people in the church in their age group.
2) There are not any programs/classes for their age group in the church.
3) Their parents
MADE them come when
they were children
and now they
are
adults and feel
tired of it. (They
feel emancipated.)
4) They attend for
one Sunday and they
do not see other
young people in
their age
group, so they look
elsewhere.
5) They see complacency of leadership. (Set in their ways and fearing any changes.)
6) Population decrease of young people in a geographic area due to economic reasons.
7) Ministers who
are out of touch
with the young or
are unable to
counsel them for
problems their age
group is or may be
facing.
8) They observe the church political powers in action.
9) Leaders fear
that the younger
people will “take
over”, and will not
give them a
chance to exercise
their talents.
10) No one seriously seeks to serve as a mentor to them.
There may be a
number of additional
reasons for the
above topic, but
those listed may
very well be a
start. What are we
doing to reverse
this serious trend?
We need to address
the reasons to
retain our youth.
Plainly, don’t get short changed. Be ready to meet our Maker. The Bible teaches that to avoid hell and gain heaven - one must:
1) Believe In Jesus As Savior (Acts 16:31) 2) Repent Of Sins (Acts 17:30) 3) Confess Christ Audibly (Acts 8:37) 4) Be Baptized In Water (Acts 2:38) 5) Live A Christian Life (Acts 14:22) 6) Be active in the church (Acts 2:47)
