"SENATE’S OPENING PRAYER BY JOE WRIGHT"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

Commentator PAUL HARVEY aired the following prayer on “The Rest of the Story” on the radio and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired !
When minister Joe Wright of the Central Christian Church in Wichita was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate on February 10, 1996, everyone was expecting the usual politically-correct generalities, but what they heard instead was a stirring prayer, passionately calling our country to repentance and righteousness.

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest and others were on their feet at the microphones protesting as soon as the Amen was stated. Within twenty-four hours the church received over 1600 phone calls and only 24 of them were negative. In six short weeks, the Central Christian Church had logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of the prayer from India, Africa, Korea, and several other foreign countries.

THE PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe on those who call evil good," but that's exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values . We confess that:

1) We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it
pluralism.
2) We have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism.
3) We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative
lifestyle.

4) We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
5) We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
6) We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
7) We have killed our unborn children and called it a choice.
8) We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
9) We have neglected to discipline our children and called it
building self-esteem.
10) We have abused power and called it political savvy.
11) We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it
ambition.
12) We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and
called it freedom of expression.
13) We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers
and called it enlightenment.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. (See Ps. 139:23,24; 51:2) Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of Kansas and who have been ordained by You to govern this great state and to direct us to the center of Your will.
I ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our nation was founded upon Christian principles which caused us to progress until those who opposed Christianity were allowed to begin inserting teaching opposed to the blessed teaching of Christ. Should we re-consider our present day position and possibly do some “back-tracking”? If you think so, possibly your statesman should hear from you. However, if we wait for another to sound the alarm - we may see it all end in disaster. Maybe you are one who God is calling to serve in a public office so that anti-God decisions may be reversed. Please do as your God-given conscience gives you direction to do. The U.S.A. is counting on God’s children who have “backbone” to follow the Spirit’s leading.
