"IS  TAKING  AN  OATH  PERMISSIBLE?"=

  =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;        Jesus stated many eternal truths from the "Sermon On The Mount" (Matthew 5-7) and in Matthew 5:33-37 He stated that one should not swear by many things.  Thus, some have concluded that tak= ing an oath in a civil court is not permissible.   That is, for a witness to ra= ise his/her hand and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and  nothing but the truth is wrong and sinful.

 

  =           Like many Scriptures - at first glance it seems as though one is prohibited from taking an oath.  However, I wo= uld encourage every good Bible student to take a deep look into this Scripture.=

 

  =           Jesus was telling the Jews within His hearing that they were doing as their forefathers had and that was swearing falsely and profaning the name of God, and not keeping their promises (Lev.19:12; Num. 30:2; Deut. 23:21).  He told them not to swear by heave= n, earth, Jerusalem, or by one's head.   Thus,= Jesus said, just don't swear at all or take an oath at all, due to your not keepi= ng the oath.  He said this to tea= ch them that their loose type of swearing was not what was needed to be done.<= /span>&n= bsp;

  =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;        =

        &= nbsp;   Some examples of oaths in the Scriptures are:

1) G= od took an oath (Hebrews 6:17)

2) J= esus answered with an oath (Matthew 26:63,64)

3) P= aul made oaths and swore on various occasions (II Cor. 1:23)<= /i>

  =           If one would take Matthew 5:37 literally, "Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No' be 'No;'...", then this would be one's entire vocabulary.  We would certainl= y be "hurting" in the human race to communicate if we were limited to these two words.

 

  =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;        I contend that Jes= us was not condemning judicial oaths taken in a civil court, nor those taken in so= lemn religious ceremonies, such as at weddings or ordinations= .  What Jesus was attempting to teach= in this portion of Scripture was that one should so live that his/her word sho= uld be able to be trusted.  In oth= er words when a person says that they will do or not do something - a friend, neighbor, business acquaintance, or any one should be able to believe that = they are going to live up to their word.  They should not have to say "I will swear to this or that on a stack of Bibles...".
