HYPOCRITES IN THE CHURCH

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

The co-worker at plant told his Christian co-worker that he would not attend church services with him because he knew too many hypocrites in the church. (A hypocrite is a play actor. They are only acting like they are a Christian, but really they are still of the devil). This is probably the #1 reason that people give for not attending church. They do not want to be in the midst of people who are phonies, fakers, frauds, or pretenders.

However, hypocrisy is not the real issue for people rejecting Jesus as Savior and refusing to be associated with His Church (The Called Out Ones). The presence of hypocrites in church services do not prove or disprove of the truthfulness of the Gospel. The truth of the entire matter is this: It will be God’s Word (Bible) that all will be judged by and not the hypocrites in the church (John 12:48). We work, shop, recreate, socialize along side of people who are “not for real”, on a daily basis. For one to say that they will not worship with one who is “not for real” is not very consistent.

Jesus condemned hypocrisy and warned mankind not to be a part of it (Matthew 6:1-18; 13:13-33). Even Paul taught that Peter played the role of a hypocrite (Galatians 2:11-13). Likewise, he encourages Christians to always stand firm in the faith and never compromise their convictions (Philippians 1:27-30).

So we all have a free-will which we exercise on a daily and hourly basis. God gives us the air that fills our lungs at the present, the water we drink, the food we eat, the ground upon which we walk, eyes with which we see, ears, taste buds, and on and on we could go. God is good. Now for us to allow the devil to deceive us into thinking that we should not worship and serve God because of some hypocrite --- we are not being very wise people, are we?

Plainly, don’t get short changed. Let’s be ready to meet our Maker. The Bible teaches that to avoid hell and gain heaven - one must:

1) Believe In Jesus As Savior (Acts 16:31) 2) Repent Of Sins (Acts 17:30) 3) Confess Christ Audibly (Acts 8:37) 4) Be Baptized In Water (Acts 2:38) 5) Live A Christian Life (Acts 14:22) 6) Be Active In the Church (Acts 2:47)
