"A LESSON FROM ONE OF GOD'S CREATURES!"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

Mankind learns lessons from various sources as he journeys throughout life. Sometimes it is in the class room from individuals. We may call them; instructor, teacher, professor, tutor, educator, trainer, master, coach, director, lecturer, guide, preacher, or doctor.

Then, sometimes one learns from observation of those things that are going on around him. One can certainly learn a good lesson from many of God's creatures. One of those beautiful creatures which I would have us to observe is the goose. In the plural we call them geese.

The Canadian geese are divided into at least five different varieties. They have been known to fly as high as 29,000 feet above sea level. Since a mile is 5,280 feet - that means that God has so designed this long necked, and web footed creature to be capable of flying over five miles up into His great heavens. They can "take off" like a jet and "land" as though they are wearing a parachute.

Some lessons which we can learn from geese are:

1) Due to their flying in a "V" formation, they can fly 70% faster than alone. Christians who "Work Together" get much more done than when working alone.

2) Geese share "Lead Spots". When the lead goose begins to tire, it moves to the rear position of the "V" formation and another replaces him. This is no doubt - due to being "out front". The wind going against the lead goose is bound to tire and needs spelled off. In the Lord's church, when one individual stays in the "lead" for a lengthy period of time often this results in: a) one tiring physically and spiritually b) one becoming a dictator c) one seeking for the followers to rubber stamp his promotions without any personal input

3) Geese look after "their hurt". When a goose has to take to the ground for rest or recuperation from being sick - there is always at least one other goose which accompanies him. This is for the purpose of "just being there", as well as protection from an enemy (fox, wolf, weasel, wolverine, coyote, etc.). The church can take a lesson on shepherding one another, during "hurt times".

4) Geese honk while in flight. This is for support (honking from behind) for the leaders. It is letting them know that they are behind them and appreciate them, as they are striving to do their best during their daily struggles. This is also needed in today's church. Rather than criticizing the leadership - members need to be encouraging them.

May we see the need to learn from our fair feathered friends. The above can serve to teach us some good lessons.
