“OLD TIMERS"
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
Normally “Old
Timers” are very
easy to recognize.
They remember World
War I, the
Depression, World
War II, Pearl
Harbor, Guadalcanal,
Normandy and Hitler.
Likewise, they
recall the Atomic
Age, the Korean War,
The Cold War, the
Jet Age and the Moon
Landing, not to
mention Vietnam. At
athletic events, one
can note them during
the playing of the
National Anthem.
They hold their hats
or hand over their
hearts and sing
without any
embarrassment. They
can sing the words
without a written
paper in front of
them. This is
because they have
them in their heart
and believe in them.
If you pass an “Old
Timer” on the
street, he'll nod,
or tip his hat to a
lady. If you bump
into an "Old Timer"
on the sidewalk,
he'll apologize.
"Old Timers" trust
strangers and are
polite to women.
They hold the door
for the next person
and always when
walking, make sure
the lady is on the
inside for
protection.
"Old Timers” get
embarrassed if
someone curses in
front of women and
children and they
don't like violence
and filth on TV and
in movies. They have
moral courage. “Old
Timers” rarely brag
unless it's about
the grandchildren in
music recitals or
Little League.
This country needs
"Old Timers" with
their decent values,
morals, and good
common sense. We
need them now more
than ever. It's the
"Old Timers" who
know our great
country is
protected, not by
politicians or
police, but by the
young men and women
in the military
serving their
country in foreign
lands, just as they
did, without a
thought except to do
a good job, the best
you can, and to get
home to loved ones.
Thank God for the
"Old Timers", we
need lots of them!
Someday, hopefully -
we will be one, and
as we pass by,
hopefully someone
will be heard
saying, “Now there
goes a true-blue
American.”
