PRAYER, CONCERNING THE MATTER
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
Praying to the
Creator of our
universe is a great
privilege and an
honor. There are a
multitude of
examples in the
Bible concerning the
topic of prayer. In
a few brief words
allow me to
elaborate on the
topic.
1) Who is the object
of prayer? (Answer -
God) The Heavenly
Father is to be
addressed in prayer
according to Jesus.
"'Our Father in
heaven...” See
Matthew 6:9.
2) In whose name or
by whose authority
should a prayer be
offered? (Answer -
Jesus) “In that day
you will no longer
ask me anything. I
tell you the truth,
my Father will give
you whatever you ask
in my name.” See
John 14:13,14;
16:23-28.
3) Prayer needs to
be made with the
right attitude.
seemingly the
Publican had things
in the correct
order. See Luke
18:9-14.
4) What position
should one be in
when praying? There
is not a required
position to be in
when praying. “For
this reason I kneel
before the
Father,...” Rom.
14:11. “'As surely
as I live,' says the
Lord, 'every knee
will bow before me;
every tongue will
confess to God.”
Eph. 4:13. Kneeling,
bowing, standing,
sitting, etc.!
5) Should one have
the eyes closed when
praying? The Bible
is silent about this
matter. However, to
put one in a more
meditative mood and
to shut-out
distractions,
closing one’s eyes
seems to be in line.
Plainly, don’t get
short changed. Let’s
be ready to meet our
Maker. The Bible
teaches that to
avoid hell and gain
heaven - one must:
1) Believe In Jesus
As Savior (16:31) 2)
Repent Of Sins
(17:30)
3) Confess
Christ Audibly
(8:37) 4) Be
Baptized In Water
(2:38)
5) Live A
Christian Life
(14:22) 6) Be Active
In the Church (2:47)
