"PREDESTINATION"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

To illustrate the difference between "Foreknowledge" and "Predestination", let me expound.

I once had a  dog which slept in our bedroom.  When the clock went off in the morning, she went to the door and whined to get  out of the bedroom.  When the door was opened, she would race down the hallway to the living room door and jump up and down to seek to go outside. When she completed "her task" outside, she would bark to get back into the house.  Next she would race to the kitchen and jump up and down at her food dish wanting to be fed.

Now, I did not predestinate or predetermine her actions to do these various things on a daily basis.  But I knew she would "do them" due to my prior knowledge of her habits.

God is omniscient (all knowing) and therefore knew that when He created mankind with a free will that he would sin and need a means of salvation.

When Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, God did not compel him to do so, but had a foreknowledge of this even prior to the creation of the world (Ephesians l:4,5,11).

The word "Predestinate" in the Bible is best understood as "Set Boundary".  In other words, God has "Predestinated The Plan", but "Not The Man" (individual).  The plan of salvation is seen in Calvary, but each person must decide if he/she wants to accept the plan.

II Peter 3:9 and John 3:16 teaches that it is God's desire all would be saved via Calvary.  The Book of Acts teaches that in order to be saved from one's sins, he/she must:  Believe in Christ (16:31); Repent Of Sin (turn from known sin 17:30); Confess Christ audibly (8:37); Be Baptized (immersed in water (2:38); Be Active in the Church (2:47);  Live Faithfully (14:22).
