"A FATHER’S SADNESS"
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
God sent us a child
just the other day,
He came to us in a
miraculous way.
But prices were high
and we had bills to
pay,
So he learned to
walk while I was
away.
So he was talking
before I knew it. As
he was growing I
heard him say,
“I’m going to be
like you Dad, I’m
going to be like
you.”
He asked, “When are
you coming home,
dad?”
“I’m sorry I don’t
know when, but we’ll
get together soon
and we’ll have a
good time then.”
Well, my son turned
ten just the other
day,
He said, “Thanks for
the ball dad, come
on let’s play.”
But I said, “Not
today son, not
today, I have a lot
to do.”
So he walked away
very blue, saying,
“I’m going to be
just like you.”
“We’ll, he came home
from college just
the other day,
He was such a fine
looking young man.
I said son, “I am so
proud of you, can
you sit for awhile?”
He responded, “I am
sorry dad but I have
a date,
What I would really
like to have is a
$100 bill please.
Then he held out his
hand and said, “Can
I have the $100
bill, please?”
Well, I have long
since retired and my
son has moved far
away.
I called him up the
other day.
I said, “Son, I
would really like to
see you, if you
don’t mind.”
He responded by
saying, “Yes dad, I
would like to come
home,
but there seems to
be no time.
The kids are busy at
school and my job is
not very kind.”
Then it occurred to
me, that my son had
grown up to be just
like me.
Yes, just like me!
Then, it also
occurred to me that
the Scripture was
being fulfilled
which says,
“Whatever a man
sows, that shall he
reap” (Galatians
6:7).
Adapted from the
song "Cat's in the
Cradle" by Harry
Chapin
Taking time to be a
"dad", is not time
that is ever wasted!
Sons and daughters
are only young once.
May the words of God be heeded!
