"HIDDEN EFFECTS OF WHERE
'ONE DRINK' CAN LEAD"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

Most people are aware that heavy drinking of alcohol can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, which leads to internal bleeding and liver failure. However, what most do not know is that drinking can lead to harming every function and organ of the human body, including:

1) THE BRAIN - CAT scans have shown that excessive. prolonged drinking can cause the brain to shrivel. In time, brain damage, memory loss, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression can result.

2) THE HEART - Excessive drinking can damage the heart upscale and increase the risk of heart attack. Plus, heavy drinkers are more likely to have high blood pressure than non-drinkers.

3) THE STOMACH - Alcohol can severely irritate the stomach and cause bleeding. Other gastrointestinal problems: Excess alcohol can cause pancreatic disorders and slow the small intestine’s ability to digest nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

4) AND THAT’S NOT ALL - Drinking can also increase risk of deadly injury, anemia, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, birth defects and problems with reproductive organs.

I Thessalonians 5:22 "Avoid every appearance (all kind) of evil.". Booze has always had a connection with evil (wrong doing). Romans 14:13b "...make up your mind not to put any stumbling block, or obstacle in your brother's way." (see also I Corthinians 8:9; I John 2:10). The conscientious Christian will work energetically in attempting not be a stumbling block to others, even if one can stop at one drink, and not everyone can do that. No one who ever took the first drink believed that it would result in him/her becoming an alcoholic. Besides booze filling one's mind with impure and sinful thoughts and making a fool out of one's self - when purchasing booze even to drink in private, someone is going to see one doing so and use this as a stumbling block to keep them away from church and the Lord. Even the doctor who prescribes a beer to flush one's kidneys or a glass of wine periodically seemingly is unaware of alcohol's addiction. There is always another medication other than booze. It is too dangerous to take the chance even with one drink. Playing with fire will sooner or later burn one.
