"SHOULD THE
CHURCH HAVE
MONEY MAKING
PROJECTS?"
by Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
The question
concerning the
topic, “Should The
Church Have
Money-Making
Projects?” has been
a matter of
discussion for a
long time and it is
doubtful if it will
go away tomorrow.
I am very much aware
that many
congregations have
regular money-making
projects such as:
rummage sales,
garage sales, yard
sales, car washes,
chicken suppers,
soup suppers,
spaghetti suppers,
bingo, and you name
it and some church
has tried it.
Once while working
in the steel
industry, prior to
my entering the
ministry, I had a
fellow worker
approach me and
attempt to sell me a
raffle ticket. When
I told him that I
did not gamble he
replied, “But it is
for a good cause, as
it is for the
church.” I then
asked what it was
that he was raffling
off and he replied,
“A case of Seagram 7
(liquor)”. Of course
I gave him an
ear-full as to what
I thought about a
church being in the
gambling business
and then the booze
business.
It is strange how
people will depart
from God’s plan and
invent their own.
This has certainly
been done pertaining
to financing the
Lord’s church. Some
will say, “But what
harm is there in
these sales?” Well,
for a starter - it
gives a false
impression to the
sinner. He contends
that if he attends a
church supper he is
doing his part in
supporting the
church. However, he
has a belly full of
food for his money.
Acts 4:32-37 and I
Corinthians 16:1, 2
teaches that the
local church should
be supported with
tithes and
offerings. The local
church is a good
place to share one's
tithes. The church
member is supplied
with a house of
worship, various
programs/ministries,
and a Pulpit
Minister. God’s plan
is tithing. Tithing
is taught in God's
Word in both the Old
and New Testaments.
See my other
articles on tithing
and stewardship.
PLEASE TITHE! By
doing so you will be
following God’s plan
for financing his
church.
