MINISTERS MEETINGS, WHY?

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

Christian ministers are a breed all of their own. No one understands a minister like another minister. I began preaching on a regular basis in September of 1967 in a rural church. This was quite an experience I worked all three shifts at a steel mill in northern WV. Unless I was working on Sunday mornings, I would shower at the mill, drive nine miles home, eat breakfast, and then, along with my family, drive seventeen miles to the rural church.½

I would teach the Adult Sunday School Class, lead the Song Service, and the Communion Service, and then preach. My family and I would grab a sandwich on our way home and I would hit the sack until 5:00 PM when I arose and grabbed a bite and then my family and I headed for the home church, which was near by.My wife and I led a Youth Group and when the minister was not present I normally would preach. Then, following services, it was back home and then off to work another shift.

If I was off, and could attend an Area Ministers Meeting I would always strive to participate in them. A minister can gain a great deal by being involved in an Area Ministers Meeting. Some of the better ones which I have attended have shared the following:

1) An Assigned Bible Study 2) Book Report (One that can help a minister to be better equipped to serve) 3) It Worked For Me (Ideas that are proven to work) 4) Rearview Mirror (Stating a minister/wife's background, etc.) 5) Funniest Thing That Ever Happened To Me In The Ministry 6) Various Programs with outside speakers (This keeps one aware of the community and world apart from the church) 7) Sermon Outlines distributed 8) Announcements of approaching events are shared (Revivals, Seminars, Concerts, Anniversaries, Retreats, etc.) 9) Prayer Time (Serious period for God's servant 10) Lunch together & fellowship with co-workers of the Kingdom.

Too often, this is the only time a minister gets to spend with his fellow ministers.
