"A POSSIBLE WORD FROM AN
'OUT GOING' PULPIT MINISTER"
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
The reason that I use the term "Pulpit Minister" is because every Christian should consider himself/herself as a minister. My reason for saying this is the word "minister" comes from a Greek word "DIAKONOS" which literally means a servant. Thus, all Christians have been saved to serve, so all Christians are ministers (servants) or should be!
As one moves to a new ministry - God will supply another "Pulpit Minister" to replace him, in his time frame, as God is good! Some suggestions as one minister departs and a new minister moves in might be:
1) If he's moving into a parsonage, see that it is "ready" for him
and his family (keep your promises).
2) Help him to unload the moving van and “feed” and "bed" his family
on the "move in day", if needed.
3) Invite him and his family to your home for refreshments or a
meal following a service. His family is new in the area and needs
fellowshipped.
4) Tell him that you are available to assist in "your area" of ministry.
5) Avoid constantly mentioning the former "Pulpit Minister".
6) Don't gossip about the past of some repentant person.
7) Call upon him to serve in time of weddings and funerals. Let the
former minister "go".
8) Inform him who is related to whom and keep telling him your name
and the names of others.
9) Don't expect him to do everything exactly like the former minister.
Everyone has his own methods.
10) Attend every possible service (Sunday School, Morning
and Evening Worship, Mid-Week, Revivals, Seminars, etc.).
11) Demonstrate your love and appreciation for him and his family for
being a part of your church family by accepting them as family!
12) Post this where it can be a constant reminder for the church.
