MONEY, TO ACCEPT OR NOT?
by Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
In reply to an E-Mail sent to me, allow me to answer in the first person.ïYou say that you had heard that KYOWVA is supported by the Disciples of Christ Allow me to expound. It is remarkable how rumors get started isn't it? Whoever is spreading the false information that KYOWVA is supported by the Disciples of Christ denomination needs to stand corrected. If you give me their name, address, phone, or e-mail I will be glad to converse with them. Or I would hope that at least you would pass this communication on to them.
I have been with KYOWVA since 1984 and I do not recall ever receiving a contribution from either the Disciples of Christ or the Anti Music Church of Christ, which are both branches of the Restoration Movement.
Within both of these branches of the Restoration Movement there are some members who do not totally agree with all that is taught. See our Web Page (www.kyowva.com) and then click on our link to the Bulletin Inserts and then to the Music articles. However, these non-agreeable brethren continue staying with the group hoping that they may be able to have some changes made in the future. Of course, most of our congregations have people in them who are not in total agreement with all that takes place among us either. As a minister, I have run into a few.
There are still some conservative congregations of the Disciples of Christ that do not go along with all that headquarters teaches, such as ordaining women elders or women ministers, accepting the un-immersed into their membership, etc. Most of those I have been around are convinced that they are correct and we are wrong. I am convinced that we are correct.
Where one draws the line as to who you accept contributions from has always been a problem. If a congregation receives a check for $100,000.00 from a worldly non-member or the family of a non-member as a memorial gift, most would say accept it with a spiirt of thanks and use it to glorify God. Now if the donor wants to control what a ministry teaches, then most conservative leaders would say, No way, keep your money.
KYOWVA has had some memorial gifts from people, who possibly are not members of our branch of the Restoration Movement. Possibly some are from various denominations or from someone who does not even claim to be a Christian. This is true of many ministries, including nearly all congregations. I am certain that at any congregation on Sunday morning prior to the Offering Prayer no one announces to all in attendance, Now if anyone present is not an immersed believer, do not put any money in the Offering Tray, or if any of you have earned your money wrongly, such as selling booze or tobacco, gambling, etc., keep your money, it is not welcome in this church
