“LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

In latter times, for some reason, disrespect for the law enforcement officers of our nation has come under assault and a continuing attack by groups such as the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), as well as certain loud-mouthed individuals. Some of these have been: TV news commentators; newspaper and magazine editors, liberal politicians and judges who seemingly want to protect the criminal more than the victims.
It is strange how a police officer is armed with a weapon to protect the honest citizens of our nation and then when he/she uses it they are put on desk duty (taken out of the field) or disarmed of their shield and gun until all charges against them (the law enforcement officer) is cleared.
No doubt there are some “bad apples” in every vocation, and they need correction, punishment, and dismissal if convicted. But, in too many cases the police officer seems to be getting a bad rap. Is it any wonder that we have many career police officers changing vocations in mid-life.
The average police officer of whom I have been acquainted is a servant of the public who is under-paid and over-worked. He lives in a glass house and is constantly observed by neighbors, friends, and enemies. If he does not dot every “i” and cross every “t” in his personal life and on his paper work to get the arrested ones into the cell - a liberal minded judge frees them before nightfall. How many of us average citizens would work under these conditions?
Some have concluded that our Justice System needs a great overhaul. However, in latter days groups such as the ACLU (America Civil Liberties Union) have pressured the legislatures to “go soft” on law breakers. They say, “Read them their rights and do not physically harm them even though they disobey, resist, disregard orders, kick, hit, curse, bite, mock, insult, violate, and abuse you.” Thus today, because of “go soft judges” and “liberal legislatures”, we have numerous individuals, who are repeated killers, rapists, and abusers of innocent people, walking the streets. Our police officers must contend with them.
Police officers are the reason that our highways are safe, our houses have not been burglarized or burned, our wives and daughters have not been raped. These “Law Up-Holders” should be commended and not condemned, by a handful of folk crying out police brutality.
The Bible states that we need police officers. Romans 13:1-7 teaches that civil government must carry out proper punishment on evil doers. It is taught in the Word of God that Capital Punishment should be quick (Eccles. 8:11), and that it at least matches the crime (Lev. 24:19), and that it should be performed publicly, and thus - would serve as a deterrent to others (Deut. 21:18-21).
