"WHAT IS THE TRINITY?
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
The word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible. But, like many other words (such as Ascension, which means a rising up as Jesus did in Acts 1:9; Matrimony, which is the act of marrying; Maternity, which is the state of being a mother, etc.), the concept of the "Trinity" is certainly recorded in the Scriptures.
The word "Tri" is often used as a prefix, which means having three parts. This can be identified in: 1) Tricycle (three wheeled-vehicle) 2) Triangle (three sided object) 3) Trifocal (eye lens which has three focal lengths).
Basically, the word is used in the Scriptures to identify the Godhead (God, the Father; God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit). In other words the Bible teaches that God has three personalities. That of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
A man can have three or more positions in life. One can see him as a: 1) son to his parents 2) father to his children 3) husband of his wife 4) worker to an employer. These are all different positions yet all the same person.
Likewise the formula H2O, which is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen can have different forms or positions. Normally, we call this water, however if we put this in a pan and put it into the freezer and when the temperature reaches 320 it becomes a different form (solid) and we call it ice. Then if we put the pan of ice on the stove and turn on the heat and when it reaches 2120 it reaches another form (gas) and we call it steam.
Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Trinity when He gave the "Great Commission" in Matthew 28:18-20. Basically, He said to spread or advance the Lord's Kingdom by teaching people of all races that the way to God and peace is by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. thus becoming a believer (Disciple, Christian, Follower, etc..).
The first mention of the concept of the Trinity is recorded in Genesis 1:26 with the plural pronouns "us" and "our", then again in 3:22 and 11:7.
In John 1:1,14 the Trinity concept is again taught as the "Word" was with God and was God, and then became flesh or in human form. Jesus in 10:30 again emphasizes the Trinity when He says that I and the Father are one.
Paul alludes to the Trinity when all three persons of the Godhead are listed in II Corinthians 13:14 and the term Godhead or Deity in Colossians 2:9.
In Acts 5:3,4 we read that Peter says that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit and then to God. If one understands the Trinity concept then there is not a contradiction seen.
