"PERCEPTIONS  OF  THE   HOLY  SPIRIT"

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

  I. ORDINARY GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Is received by every obedient believer at his/her time of water baptism (Acts 2:38; 5:32).  However, one must be brought to the baptismal waters by FAITH in Jesus that He will save one from sins and that His blood is applied at baptism.  The gift will assist the disciple of Jesus to live the Christian life and will help one to bear the Fruit Of The Spirit (Gal. 5:22,23).  This is what Jesus was teaching Nicodemus in John 3:5.  Thus, immersion in water to receive this gift is a "Must"!

II. BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Was received by the apostles just prior to the birthday of the church (Acts 1:1-5; II Cor. 12:12), and the household of Cornelius to empower them to perform special works for God (Acts 10:1-48; 11:15-18).  These miraculous actions served as a foundation for the church and were temporary.  It could be compared to a scaffold which was used in construction of a house.  After the house is completed the scaffolding is removed, as it is not needed.  Likewise the infant church, while it was in its' infancy & under construction needed the special works, but not so after the Word (Bible) superseded it (I Cor. 13:10).

III. EXTRAORDINARY GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Was received by those who had received the laying on of hands of those who had received the Baptism Of The Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-19).  They could perform special works for God, but could not pass on the ability to perform special works for God to others.  Thus, by the time the apostles had been killed and likewise those whom they had laid their hands upon to pass on the ability to do miraculous works, the New Testament had been completed, thus superseding these powers.  It is by the written Word, which is preached that mankind is saved from one's sins, and not seeing some miracle take place.  Paul said in Romans 1:16 that the Gospel had POWER in it.
