"CAN A CHRISTIAN LOSE THE HOLY SPIRIT?"
By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.
The Scriptures are very plain concerning when one receives the Holy Spirit. It is when the repentant believer in Jesus responds to the gospel invitation and is baptized in water (Acts 2:38; 5:32). I say the repentant believer is the saved believer because even the demons are believers, yet they are not saved (James 2:18-20).
The repentant baptized believer is the one who is the saved believer and now has Christ and the Holy Spirit in one’s heart (Ephesians 3:16,17).
The saved believer must sow to the Spirit, in order to acquire eternal life (Galatians 6:8,9), which is just the opposite of sowing to the flesh. In order to be progressively filled with the Spirit one must allow the Word of God to dwell within oneself (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:18,19).
There is a constant call for the saved believer to “walk in the Spirit” and by doing so one can have victory over sin (Galatians 5:16). The promise is made that a saved believer walking after the Spirit will not be condemned (Romans 8:1,4).
However, because God did not make any of us like a robot so that he could command our every move - we have the choice of forsaking God’s way, if we chose to do such. This is why we have Scriptures which state that we should never grieve or quench the Spirit (Ephesians 4:22-24; I Thessalonians 5:19). The call is for the believer to constantly bear fruit for Christ (John 15:1-8; Galatians 5:22,23).
One resists the Holy Spirit when one refuses His teachings (Acts 7:51; James 1:19-20), and if one does not repent of known sins then one will drive the Holy Spirit out of one’s life (Revelation 3:14-20).
