HARD  TO  BELIEVE

By Dr. Hoyt W. Allen, Jr.

The following article came to me recently and I contended that I should pass it on.  It has been slightly edited.

Some of us older folk had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.  If you are of the younger generation you need to read the following and weep!  Looking back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have.

1) As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

2) Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

3) Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.

4) We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.

5) We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

6) We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.

7) We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

8) No one was able to reach us all day - No cell phones, unthinkable.

9)  We played dodgeball and sometimes the ball would really hurt.

10) We got cut and broke bones and broke teeth and there were no law-suits from these accidents. They were just accidents. No one was to blame but ourselves.

11) We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. They really hurt, too.

12) We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda but we were never overweight.... .....we were always outside playing.

13) We shared one orange soda with three friends, from one bottle and no one died from this.

14) We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, Boom Boxes, Video Games at all, 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cellular phones, personal computers, Internet chat rooms, we just had friends. We went outside and found them.

 15) We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Can you imagine such a thing.

16) Without asking a parent, by ourselves - we went out there in the big cold cruel world and even without a guardian.

17) We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.

18) Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

19) Some students weren't as smart as others so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade, and parents did not complain.

20) Get a whipping in school - get a second one at home.

21) Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. No one to hide behind.

22) The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law, imagine that!

23) This older generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors, the world has ever known.

24) The past 50 years has been an explosion of inventions and new ideas. Most of the progressive leaders did not possess college degrees.

25) We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

Throughout all of the history of mankind no matter how intelligent one becomes the smarter of the human race have always concluded that the Bible has the answers to the problems encountered in life.  One who studies it with an open mind and who is willing to accept its teachings will prosper in this life in the things which really count.  Today, God knows each of our hearts - please consider the following.

Plainly, don’t get short changed.  Let’s be ready to meet our Maker.  The Bible teaches that to avoid hell and gain heaven - one must:

 1) Believe In Jesus As Savior (Acts 16:31)  2) Repent Of Sins  (Acts 17:30)   3) Confess Christ Audibly (Acts 8:37)   4) Be Baptized In   Water (Acts 2:38)   5) Live A  Christian Life (Acts 14:22)
